TURNAROUND // When companies face complex challenges, interim managers bring expertise not only in change management but also in restructuring.

The business world can shift suddenly, plunging companies into deep crises triggered by economic downturns, structural changes, or complex internal transitions, including digital ones. Such shocks can strain cash flow—even for profitable businesses—sometimes leading to insolvency.

“Problems vary greatly between companies,” explains Frédéric Rudondy, partner at NIM Europe, specializing in turnaround missions. “But often, we see poor cash flow management or strategic gaps. Leaders look too often in the rearview mirror instead of anticipating and preparing for what’s ahead.”

Identifying early warning signs and knowing how to surround oneself with the right expertise are two keys to a successful turnaround. “It’s important to discuss the situation with seasoned professionals,” says Jean-François Galloüin, independent corporate director. “Board members may have stakes, but they don’t have the emotional attachment. They provide a different perspective for the leader.” Free from bias, they can take on the “bad cop” role and alert entrepreneurs when they are in denial.

“Leaders often struggle to acknowledge mistakes or admit challenges; even when they haven’t made an error, situations inevitably become more difficult,” confirms Bernard Tronel, Managing Director at Essensys France, a specialist in interim management.

A Little-Known Profession

The entrepreneurial ecosystem—including chambers of commerce, courts, lawyers, accountants, and associations—has long promoted preventive measures, often in collaboration with public authorities. Interim management is part of the solution toolkit, yet it remains underrecognized in French companies: 40% of executives have never heard of it, and only a third understand what it entails, according to a recent OpinionWay study conducted for Grant Alexander, a consulting and HR services group.
